Sechseläuten: The Zurich guild tradition explained

When the Böögg goes up in flames on Sechseläutenplatz, the whole of Zurich is on its feet - and right in the middle of it all: the Zunft zur Waag. As one of Zurich's oldest guilds, it has helped shape the traditional spring festival for centuries. But what is actually behind Sechseläuten? And what role does the Zunfthaus zur Waag play?

What is Sechseläuten?

Sechseläuten is a traditional spring festival in Zurich that takes place every year on the third Monday in April. It symbolizes the transition from winter to spring and is closely linked to Zurich's guild system. The name "Sechseläuten" comes from the historical practice of ending work at 6 pm in the summer months, which was signaled by the ringing of church bells. The highlight of Sechseläuten is the burning of the Böögg - a snowman figure that symbolizes winter. The faster his head, filled with firecrackers, explodes, the more beautiful the coming summer is said to be. This tradition has its roots in pagan customs in which winter was driven away by fire.

The guilds: Historical roots and modern presence

Zurich's historic guilds were founded in 1336 and played a central role in political and social life. Today, they continue to exist as associations and maintain the city's cultural heritage. At Sechseläuten, the guilds present themselves in historical costumes and parade through the city in a festive procession.

The Zunft zur Waag unites the historic professions of wool and linen weavers, bleachers and milliners. Founded in 1336, it is one of the oldest guilds in Zurich. At Sechseläuten, it wears a milliner's costume and presents the traditional "Gigampfi-Wasserstampfi", a simple water-scooping device, on floats.

The Zunfthaus zur Waag: history you can touch

The Zunfthaus zur Waag serves as a meeting place for the Zunft zur Waag. All of the guild's events take place behind closed doors in the historic, large guild hall on the third floor - including Sechseläuten. Nevertheless, the hall can be hired for private and business events at other times. Guests can immerse themselves in the history of the building and the guild and experience private parties in a unique atmosphere.

Sechseläuten is more than just a spring festival - it is a living piece of Zurich's history. Whether it's the children's parade on Sunday, the festive procession of the guilds on Monday or the spectacular Böögg burning: the festival offers insights into centuries-old traditions and invites you to experience Zurich's cultural diversity up close.

The Zunfthaus zur Waag is the ideal place for anyone who wants to experience these traditions up close all year round. This is where history and hospitality meet - an experience not to be missed.
